An expert in the graphic palette, the graphic illustrator is above all an artist capable of working on drawing on any digital medium: websites, newsletters, advertisements, etc.
When he works on a video game, he must translate the instructions of the screenwriter and/or game designer into images, most often animated. Through the quality of the illustrations, the choice of colors, the realism of the textures and the shadows and lights, its first objective is to create an attractive visual universe to “glue” the player to their screen! With a major imperative: implement images that do not require too long a loading time, to avoid player fatigue. Depending on their specialization (decors, textures, etc.), the graphic designer must first and foremost know how to master as many 2D (notably Photoshop) and 3D (3ds Max, Maya, etc.) software as possible. But he also uses other tools: computer equipped with specific software, optical pencil, scanners, graphics tablet, etc. The graphic designer-illustrator must therefore know how to combine real creative qualities and high-level technical skills. He must keep up to date with new developments in the world of video games, which is constantly changing technologically and artistically. He works under the direction of the project manager of an agency or studio, or directly with the client. In this case, he is responsible for monitoring the specifications. The pace of work is very fast and the fear of making mistakes is always present. Compliance with production deadlines is imperative.
